In a tragic incident, two Indian medical students studying in Kazakhstan lost their lives in a road accident near Almaty on Tuesday, January 6. The accident has left the Indian medical student community in shock and raised concerns about student safety abroad.
The deceased students have been identified as Karan Parmar and Rishiraj Baraith, both residents of Rajasthan. They were pursuing their medical education at the South Kazakh Medical Academy, a popular destination for Indian MBBS aspirants. According to reports, the students were travelling from Shymkent to Almaty when their vehicle met with the fatal accident.
Three others sustained serious injuries in the same incident and are currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a local hospital in Kazakhstan. The injured include Manjeet Singh Solanki and Rahul Yadav, both medical students from Rajasthan, and Brijeshkumar Bharatkumar Bhati, a resident of Gujarat who was visiting Kazakhstan as a tourist.
Medical authorities have described the condition of the injured as critical but stable, and continuous monitoring is underway.
Confirming the incident, Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, National Executive Member of the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), expressed deep sorrow over the loss. He has formally requested the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to intervene and provide urgent assistance, including facilitating the repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased students to India.
FAIMA and Indian student associations in Kazakhstan are reportedly coordinating with local authorities, hospitals, and the Indian Embassy to ensure medical care for the injured students and support for the affected families.
This unfortunate incident has once again highlighted the challenges faced by Indian students studying medicine abroad, particularly related to travel safety, emergency medical support, and crisis management. Education consultants and student bodies have urged parents and students to remain cautious while travelling long distances in foreign countries and to stay connected with official student networks and embassies.
The Indian Embassy in Kazakhstan is expected to issue an official statement soon regarding further assistance and updates on the situation.
